Digital Citizenship

While students’ focus will be on utilizing technology to represent and sell their community, we will be embedding media citizenship skills within their classwork using the teaching resources from Common Sense (https://www.commonsense.org/education/scope-and-sequence), as well as other resources such as Copyright Matters! This will occur in all of the classes involved in the Synergy project (Tourism 12, Media 9/10, and Photo 9/10). We will give mini-lessons on all aspects of digital citizenship and will put the bulk of our focus on copyright, building community online, rights and responsibilities, the ethics of photo retouching and the opportunities and challenges of building an online community.

Students will be taught about the responsibility they possess of representing someone in the best way possible, specifically around the taking and publishing of appropriate photos. For this project, the ethics of content will be a strong focus. One way to achieve this end is an

activity where students are to interview and take each others’ pictures. This immediately creates some discomfort as many people are shy about being photographed and worried about looking silly. During this activity students realize what it feels like to be in front of the lens and will hopefully approach their subjects with sensitivity and respect.

In addition, we will ensure that parents/guardians have signed and returned the SET-BC consent form, as well as the School District #71 protocol and consent form. It is a great responsibility to put anything online and we will be sure to educate our students about this before, during and at the culmination of this project.
