January Update

Tourism students hit the ground running coming back from Christmas holidays. A number of groups finished up their filming and photography over the break. In the last couple of weeks, students were compiling and editing their videos and/or creating their webpage as part of the overall group tourism site.

Students used Weebly to create the class website, as well as their group pages. One of the strengths of Weebly was that multiple groups could be working on the account at the same time, creating their own pages. One of the issues we ran into was that one of our International students changed the language to Japanese. We were eventually able to change it back to English after some troubleshooting:)

One of the biggest challenges for filming and photography was that students needed to do the this outside of school time. It was hard trying to find daylight hours and times they could co-ordinate with the group mates . As well, the weather hindered some of the places they wanted to film - we had quite a bit of snow in the Valley which is not the norm. We realize that this project would have been more ideal in Semester II, when we already had the equipment at the beginning of the course and when the weather was more ideal for capturing more of the splendours of the Comox Valley (e.g. beaches, swimming, etc).

The bulk of the work is complete but students have two more classes to polish their work such as making sure all links work, design is solid, and written work is proofread. We are still experiencing issues with one group being able to upload their large video - fingers crossed we get it sorted out tomorrow. Here is a link to the class tourism site: https://highlandsecondarytourism.weebly.com/

Next semester, students in Media 11/12 and Leadership 9/10 will learn how to use the GoPros, Windows Surface Pros, and Filmora. We are still sorting out details but their projects will focus on the Comox Valley.
