Tourism 11 Update

In Tourism class, we worked with students explore more about digital citizenship. In one lesson, students learned about digital footprints, explored their own digital presence, and learned strategies on how to maintain or “clean-up” their digital footprints. In the next lesson, we taught students about copyright including Creative Commons licensing, citations, and Canadian Copyright Matters educational applications.

Late last week, we received all of the equipment from our Student Services department who set up the Windows Surface Pros for us. The class hasn’t had an opportunity to really start playing with the Surface Pros or Filmora yet. One of our teachers started yesterday, and initially found Filmora really slow. We will delve into that further this week.

Some students began filming locations with one of the GoPro cameras; we are still waiting on the second memory card so we could only sign out one at a time. The students were very impressed with the quality of film that they were able to record with the cameras. The groups that have filmed so far have recorded video at the local ski hill, skate park, golf course, and beaches. We did find that it took a long time to transfer the footage from the GoPro to our computers. We are going to look at potentially getting an external hard drive to speed up the transfer process.

Our students are at varying stages of their projects. As mentioned, some groups have begun filming. Other groups are still trying to sort out specifics of their project. Some of them have run into challenges in terms of making contact with community members to set up interviews or to get permission to film them/their locations.

Our goal is to have all groups get their film footage and images completed before Christmas break. Realistically, this may need to occur over the holidays as well. Unfortunately, we only have a few weeks of class in January before semester end. They will need to complete their multi-media presentations in a relatively short time but this could be a very effective incentive J
